On a different note, breaking from the recent run of posts dealing with death, sorrow and loss, but still with connections to the war in the Southwest Pacific, is an Area of Interest map for the New Guinea Islands.
Patterned after maps fashioned with the cartographic genius of Mr. John Nelson, this static map highlights the islands of New Guinea, New Britain, New Ireland, and the Admiralties. It incorporates some hillshade to accentuate terrain as well as several coastal effects to make the myriad specks of small islands gain more prominence.
While this map is out of my usual realm of displaying historical data, it does give a beautiful overview of one of the operational areas of the 345th Bomb Group during WW2.
