Fatalities were usually associated with aircraft losses. In this map, the crew status for the 118 downed airplanes of the 345th Bomb Group is shown.
The map is essentially the same as that displayed in the previous post but the data has been divided into five different types of status: all crew rescued (green dots); last known location (yellow dots); some crew rescued (orange dots); unknown(red dots); and all crew KIA (grey dots).
From a look at the dots on the map, it appears that the rescue of entire crews was most successful around the eastern end of the New Guinea islands and quickly became less common as missions moved to the west and north. This could be a result of the mission times becoming longer as distances between bases and targets increased, with most of the increased flight time being spent over water.
Historic data for this map was checked against the DPAA Not Recovered List for November 2019 as well as the findagrave grave site location website. As recovery efforts are ongoing, this map should be considered a work in progress as crew status could change.
